Curly Hair Routine

When it comes to curly hair, moisture is the key and should be the main focus of your routine. A lot of women with curly hair struggle with dryness and frizz, so making sure your hair has enough moisture is crucial. Also, keeping your hair moisturized can give you a longer window of time between your wash days (you’re welcome!) Below we have curated what we think are the essentials to a curly hair routine!

Pre-Wash Treatment

For women who want to make sure their hair is extra moisturized, we recommend starting your hair washing day using a Pre-wash treatment. This will protect your hair’s natural shine and moisture while also helping to detangle your curls. If your curls are extra tangled, you can comb your hair out with a wide tooth comb while the prewash is still in your hair.
Our Recommendation: Curlsmith Super Slip Prewash - $28

Shampoo and Condition

When you finally get to washing your hair, make sure to pick a shampoo made for curl hair! We recommend the wash, rinse, repeat method before applying conditioner. The first wash will remove product buildup, and the second wash will be able to penetrate your hair and scalp and get it fully clean. When applying your conditioner, make sure to rake it through your hair with your fingers to prevent tangles. We recommend letting the conditioner sit in your hair for a few minutes in the shower before fully rinsing.

Leave-In Conditioner

Once your hair is clean you can apply a leave-in conditioner. This will ensure that your hair dries with a layer of moisture protecting it. When it comes to how much to use, you know your hair better than anyone else. If you’re new to leave-in conditioner, a good rule of thumb is to use a quarter size to start and add more if needed. This is also a great time to brush out your hair with a wide tooth comb if necessary.

Curl Mousse or Gel

If you are interested in having defined curls, don’t skip this step! Using a curl mousse or hair gel is what’s going to give you weightless, coiled curls that don’t frizz. Some women prefer one over the other, but we recommend trying both and seeing what works best for you!
Our Recommendation: Pattern Curl Mousse - $23

Volumizing Mousse or Spray (optional)

Volumizing products are definitely optional! It’s a personal choice, but we definitely recommend women with thinner hair to use them. These products will lift your hair and give the illusion of thicker, more luscious hair!
Our Recommendation: Moroccanoil Volumizing Mousse - $30

Diffuse or Air-Dry?

Whether you diffuse your curly hair or air dry is another personal choice. Some women swear by using a hair dryer with a diffuser attachment, while others exclusively air dry. We think women who are wanting the appearance of thicker and more voluminous hair should dry their hair using a diffuser. For the women who are wanting their curls to lay a little flatter, we recommend the air dry method.

Hair Oil (optional)

Feel like your hair needs a little more moisture? Try using hair oil. This will ensure your hair’s protection against damage and frizz.

Wavy Hair Routine

When it comes to wavy hair, it can be hard to find a method that works for you. It can be very frustrating to have hair that is in between curly and straight, but we’re here to help. This routine we have outlined will be sure to give your wavy hair body and shine while also defining your waves.

Shampoo & Conditioner

When it comes to picking a shampoo and conditioner, we recommend a clarifying duo. This kind of shampoo will keep your hair squeaky clean and remove any product buildup that accumulates between washes. When conditioning, make sure to keep the conditioner off your scalp. This will prevent oily hair and give your roots a lift.

Towel Dry

Go ahead and get your towel, but NOT your everyday bath towel. To prevent stripping your hair and creating frizz, we recommend using a microfiber towel or a soft cotton t-shirt. Remember to be gentle. Rubbing your hair can cause matts and tangles. We recommend just tying your hair up and letting the towel do its job.
Our Recommendation: Turbie Twist microfiber hair wraps - $5.99

Leave in conditioner

Adding a leave-in conditioner after towel drying is so important! In order for your waves to have definition, they need to be properly moisturized. This added moisture also ensures protection from humidity and frizz. This is a good time to brush out any tangles with a wide tooth comb, if necessary.

Air Dry or Diffuse

This step is up to you and your preference. Some women love how easy it is to just let their hair dry naturally and do it’s thing, while others like to have more control over their hair. If you want our opinion, we suggest using a diffuser to dry your hair if you are wanting more volume. If you are wanting less volume, air drying would be best.

Texturizing spray

We highly recommend using a texturizer spray if you want that beautiful wave definition. Using a texturizer spray will also give your hair a bit more hold and volume for those fun updos!
Our Recommendation: Moroccanoil Dry Texture Spray - $30

Straight Hair Routine

Straight hair girls know the struggle. Everyone thinks straight hair is the best to have, but in reality there are a lot of struggles in having straight hair. A good hair routine can be the difference between flat, dull hair and voluminous, shining locks.

Shampoo and Conditioner

When selecting a shampoo and conditioner, we recommend finding a volumizing duo that works well for you. Remember to keep the shampoo close to the scalp, and the conditioner to the ends. This will prevent your hair from becoming dry, while also keeping your roots from looking oily.

Volumizing Mousse

If you want some extra volume in your straight hair we recommend a volumizing mousse. This will give your hair some extra hold and lift on the roots.
Our Recommendation: Moroccanoil Volumizing Mousse - $30

Heat protectant

Heat protectant is important for all hair types but even more so for straight hair. Straight hair has a tendency to show damage quicker than other hair types, especially on the ends. Therefore we recommend using a good heat protectant before you dry your hair and also before you use any hot tools.
Our Recommendation: Chi 44 Iron Guard Thermal Protection Spray - $18.50

Drying

For straight hair, we recommend using a hair dryer. This will give you more control on how much volume you give your hair. For extra volume, dry your roots with your hair turned upside down. We also recommend using a round brush with the hair dryer once your hair is 85% dry.

Dry Shampoo

Dry shampoo is any girl's best friend, but for straight hair girlies, dry shampoo is a MUST! We recommend using it between washes. This will help your hair’s volume hold and keep your hair feeling and looking fresh!
Our recommendation: Dark or Light Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo - $26

Hair Oil (optional)

If you have naturally dry hair, need a moisture pick me up, or are trying to combat frizz, a hair oil is something that could help. Make sure you ONLY apply it to the bottom ends of your hair. This will prevent your roots from going flat and will give you a sleek finish!
